Kouri Island | A Must-Visit Destination in Northern Okinawa
If you're looking for bucket-list spots in Okinawa, Kouri Island is almost certainly near the top of the list. Located in northern Okinawa, this small coral reef island boasts breathtaking turquoise ocean vistas, pristine natural beaches, and a wonderful variety of activities that draw countless independent travelers every year.
In this guide, I'll walk you through Kouri Island's transportation options, top attractions, recommended restaurants, and itineraries so you can quickly grasp its unique charm and plan your Okinawa road trip seamlessly!
(Beyond its reputation as a scenic travel hotspot, Kouri Island is known as the mythological birthplace of the Ryukyuan "Adam and Eve." Ancient Ryukyuans believed human life originated here, earning it the nickname "Island of the Gods." Having visited twice now, I find it just as mesmerizing every time—it captures the purest essence of tropical Okinawa!)
◎ How to Get to Kouri Island
Unlike some remote Okinawa islands that require ferries, Kouri Island is connected to Okinawa Main Island via a sea-crossing bridge, making access relatively straightforward. There are three main ways to reach the island: rental car / self-drive, local public bus, and guided sightseeing bus tours:
1. Rental Car / Self-Drive
Since most travelers rent a vehicle in Okinawa, the vast majority reach Kouri Island by renting a car and driving. It offers the highest degree of flexibility: it takes about 90 minutes from Naha City, and only around 30 minutes from northern hubs like Nago or Motobu. This is hands down the most recommended travel method.
2. Local Public Bus
Currently, the only public transit reaching the island is the Four Islands Line (YKB4T) operated by Yanbaru Express Bus. The route connects Sesoko Island, Motobu, Nakijin, and Kouri Island (as shown in the route map below). It runs approximately 4 to 6 times daily, with fares ranging from 160 to 800 JPY. For detailed schedules, fares, and route diagrams, check the official website.
(Because the "Four Islands Line" operates exclusively in northern Okinawa, traveling from Naha City or central Okinawa requires transfers—such as taking the Yanbaru Express Airport Line or standard route buses first. Overall convenience is relatively low. For a comprehensive transit tutorial, please check my Okinawa Bus Travel Guide.)
3. Sightseeing Day Tours
The final option is joining an organized day tour! Several convenient half-day and full-day bus tours depart directly from downtown Naha or the American Village, such as the Okinawa Central & Northern Day Tour, the Central & Northern Day Tour (Departs Naha/Chatan), and the Okinawa Hip Hop Sightseeing Bus. With these tours, you won't need to stress about transportation at all—just sit back, relax, and enjoy the sights!
◎ What to See on Kouri Island: Top 5 Attractions
Although Kouri Island is a compact coral island spanning just 3.13 square kilometers—driving around the entire perimeter takes only about 15 minutes—it is packed with scenic highlights. Generally, I recommend dedicating at least half a day, or even a full day if you prefer an unhurried, in-depth visit.
Here are my top 5 recommended attractions on Kouri Island: Kouri Bridge, Kouri Beach, Kouri Ocean Tower, Heart Rock, and Tokei Beach. MAPCODEs are included for effortless car GPS navigation.
(The main attractions on Kouri Island are distributed along the coastal ring road, so you can explore comfortably in either a clockwise or counterclockwise direction.)
1. Kouri Bridge
This is the second-longest open-sea bridge in Okinawa Prefecture (it was the longest until Irabu Bridge surpassed it in 2015), stretching nearly 2 kilometers. Beyond serving as the essential lifeline connecting to Kouri Island, the bridge itself and the surrounding waters create an awe-inspiring, postcard-perfect panorama that you simply cannot miss!
◎ Address: Kouri Bridge, Nakijin Village, Kunigami District, Okinawa Prefecture (MAPCODE: 485 601 832*80)
◎ Admission: Free
◎ Official Website: Kouri Bridge
(Just before crossing the bridge from the southern side, there is the Kouri Bridge South Observatory (古宇利大橋南詰展望所). From here, you can capture the grand expanse of the bridge, Kouri Island ahead, and the iconic frog-shaped rock "Kaerujima" resting in the water. Although it is a quick stop, I highly recommend pausing here to soak in the ocean vista!)
(No matter how you travel to Kouri Island, crossing Kouri Bridge is an inevitable highlight. There is a dedicated pedestrian sidewalk on the bridge as well. On clear sunny days, the panoramic ocean views are stunning—just driving across melts all your stress away and gets you excited for your island adventure!)
2. Kouri Beach (古宇利ビーチ)
When it comes to the most famous and iconic beach on Kouri Island, Kouri Beach takes the crown. In addition to its remarkably clear, shallow turquoise waters and soft sand, the beach area is well-equipped with rental shops, shower facilities, and public restrooms, meaning comfort and convenience are guaranteed. During summer, exciting water sports abound—making it a haven for beach lovers!
◎ Address: Kouri Beach, Kouri, Nakijin Village, Okinawa Prefecture (MAPCODE: 485 662 831*22)
◎ Admission: Free
◎ Opening Hours: Open year-round (Water sports season runs April to October)
◎ Official Website: Kouri Beach
(As soon as you cross Kouri Bridge, Kouri Beach appears right at the bridge foot on both sides. On sunny days, the water color is sensational! It easily ranks among my personal most recommended beaches in Okinawa. Okinawa has so many gorgeous stretches of coast, but this one never ceases to amaze me.)
(If you visit during swimming season, on-site rental shops provide equipment at standard Okinawa rates: beach parasols for 1,000 JPY, lounge chairs for 1,500 JPY, and life vests, swim rings, or snorkel sets for around 500 JPY each. For water activities, banana boats run around 1,500 JPY and jet skis around 2,000 JPY. Nearby coin-operated hot showers cost roughly 100 JPY per use.)
(Right adjacent to the beach is the "Kouri Fureai Plaza (古宇利島ふれあい広場)," which combines casual eateries, souvenir shops, and local farm-stand produce where you can sample regional delicacies. It also features around 80 free parking spaces, making it the most convenient parking area for visiting Kouri Beach—just follow the road immediately after exiting the bridge.)
3. Kouri Ocean Tower (古宇利オーシャンタワー)
Kouri Ocean Tower is another flagship attraction on the island. Standing proudly on the hillside, its crisp white sail-shaped silhouette catches every visitor's eye. Inside, you'll discover a world-class shell museum displaying over 10,000 specimens from across the globe, alongside tastefully designed ocean-view restaurants, souvenir boutiques, and cafes. Visitors also ride an autonomous electric cart up the garden trail and ascend the panoramic observation decks for unbeatable views over Okinawa's coral reef waters—fun for adults and kids alike!
◎ Address: 538 Kouri, Nakijin Village, Okinawa Prefecture (MAPCODE: 485 693 485*14)
◎ Admission: Adults 1,000 JPY; Elementary/Junior High Students 500 JPY (Discount Tickets Here | Okinawa Fun Pass)
◎ Official Website: Kouri Ocean Tower
(After purchasing your ticket at the entrance, you board a self-driving electric cart that winds up the hillside. As you ride through vibrant tropical gardens, an audio commentary (available in multiple languages including English) introduces Kouri Island's history and ecology. The ride takes only around 10 minutes, but it's so entertaining that it feels over in a flash!)
(Next, you'll enter the Shell Museum. While not huge, the collection is genuinely impressive—featuring shells of every imaginable shape, color, and size, plus handcrafted shell jewelry and souvenirs to browse.)
(Every floor from the 2nd level up functions as an observatory. Levels 2 and 3 offer indoor panoramic viewing, while the 4th-floor open-air rooftop deck has no glass barrier, providing unobstructed vistas of Kouri Bridge and the shimmering surrounding sea. There's also a "Bell of Happiness" on the terrace, cementing its reputation as a beloved "Lovers' Sanctuary" in Japan!)
4. Heart Rock (ハートロック)
Nestled on Ti-nu Beach (ティーヌ浜), Heart Rock shot to nationwide fame after starring in a popular Japanese TV commercial featuring the boy band Arashi. Two natural heart-shaped coral rock formations standing against the crashing waves create a wonderfully romantic scene, earning Kouri Island the romantic title of "Island of Love." If you want dreamy, Instagram-worthy photos in Okinawa, this is the place to be!
◎ Address: 2 Kouri, Nakijin Village, Kunigami District, Okinawa Prefecture (MAPCODE: 485 751 179)
◎ Admission: Free
◎ Opening Hours: Open year-round (No lifeguards on duty)
◎ Parking Fee: 100 to 500 JPY depending on the lot. I highly recommend Parking Lot Chura (駐車場 ちゅら)—it is the closest lot to the trail yet the cheapest (only 100 JPY), operating on an unattended honor system where you drop coins into a collection box.
(The trail leading down to Heart Rock is relatively narrow, slightly steep, and covered in loose sand. While the recently constructed footpath is far more manageable than the rugged natural path of years past, please wear comfortable walking shoes and tread carefully!)
(During low tide, visitors can walk right up close to the base of Heart Rock. During high tide, however, the beach footprint shrinks drastically, becoming quite crowded as everyone gets squeezed near the foot of the trail. If you want pristine, uncrowded photos, I strongly advise checking the tide forecast before heading out!)
(Because Ti-nu Beach is compact and waves can be unpredictable, swimming is not really recommended here. However, peering into the clear tidal pools reveals a thriving marine ecosystem: small tropical fish, crabs, sea urchins, and starfish are everywhere. Kouri Island's natural environment remains beautifully untouched!)
5. Tokei Beach (トケイ浜)
Our final highlight is a peaceful local hidden gem frequented mostly by Okinawan locals. Free from tour group crowds and offering far greater privacy, Tokei Beach feels almost like a private tropical hideaway. Visitors can swim, snorkel, or bask in the sunshine. Local lore says if you hunt along the sand and find a "Peace Shell" (shaped like a hand throwing a peace sign), it brings lasting happiness!
◎ Address: Tokei Beach, Kouri, Nakijin Village, Okinawa Prefecture (MAPCODE: 485 752 134*21)
◎ Admission: Free
◎ Opening Hours: Open year-round (No lifeguards on duty)
If you only plan a half-day trip to Kouri Island, pick your favorite 2 or 3 highlights from above and pair them with nearby attractions in northern Okinawa for a well-rounded day tour! Top nearby recommendations include Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium, Nakijin Castle Ruins, Neo Park Okinawa, Okinawa Fruits Land, and Busena Marine Park.
◎ Best Restaurants & Food on Kouri Island
Whether you're visiting for a half day or a full day, you will likely enjoy lunch or coffee on the island. Here are the top 3 recommended restaurants on Kouri Island where you can treat your tastebuds alongside gorgeous island views!
1. KOURI SHRIMP
When asking anyone about the most famous, must-eat culinary delight on Kouri Island, KOURI SHRIMP tops every list. Starting humbly as a beachside food truck by Kouri Beach, it has grown into a stylish two-story restaurant. During lunch hours, lines often stretch out the door. Its signature garlic shrimp plates—vibrant, intensely flavorful, garlicky, and seasoned with local Okinawan awamori—are an absolute must-try when visiting!
◎ Address: 314 Kouri, Nakijin Village, Kunigami District, Okinawa (MAPCODE: 485 692 167*88)
◎ Opening Hours: Daily 11:00 – 18:00
◎ Official Website: KOURI SHRIMP
(Dining is available on both floors: you place your order at the first-floor counter or self-order kiosk, then pick up your meal upstairs on the second floor. Perched on a gentle slope, the upper dining area overlooks Kouri Beach and Kouri Bridge in the distance.)
(The shrimp plate delivers rich, savory flavors. While the garlic seasoning is quite potent—I ordered the original flavor—it pairs exceptionally well with steamed rice. Other popular variations include spicy and butter-lemon flavors, with plates generally priced around 1,300 to 1,500 JPY.)
2. Gajumaru Rock (ガジュマルロック)
If you're eager to sample authentic Okinawan regional specialties on Kouri Island, Gajumaru Rock is a fantastic choice. The menu features Agu pork dishes, taco rice, curry rice, and burgers. Sweet treats are equally acclaimed, with the Beni-imo (Purple Sweet Potato) Pancake reigning as their signature dessert. The café also features outdoor hammocks nestled among greenery, allowing guests to unwind in the gentle breeze while soaking up dazzling ocean panoramas!

3. Restaurant L LOTA (エルロタ)
Arguably boasting the most exquisite dining view on Kouri Island, Restaurant L LOTA pairs sleek industrial architecture with floor-to-ceiling glass windows, offering diners sweeping vistas of Kouri Bridge and the azure sea. They specialize in artisanal afternoon tea, specialty coffee, and house-made desserts—such as their celebrated Island Pumpkin Pudding. Savory dishes like gourmet pastas and hearty sandwiches are also served. If you want gorgeous travel photos paired with fine food, this is the ultimate spot!

◎ Accommodation on Kouri Island
Finally, regarding hotels and lodging on Kouri Island: because most visitors explore on half-day or day trips, and island amenities are less extensive than in nearby Nago City or Motobu Town, relatively few tourists stay overnight on the island itself. Nevertheless, Kouri Island features several luxury boutique hotels and private holiday villas. If you're seeking a secluded slow-paced getaway with breathtaking sunset views, staying on the island is a magical experience; however, for travelers prioritizing budget and urban convenience, staying in Nago or Motobu may be more practical!
