Churaumi Aquarium | Okinawa's Most Iconic Travel Attraction
Located in northern Okinawa, Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium is arguably the most popular sightseeing spot in all of Okinawa, and a must-visit destination in the hearts of countless Japanese and international travelers alike. The aquarium showcases an extraordinary variety of marine life, complemented by its striking architecture and breathtaking coastal views. Visiting Okinawa without stopping here would be an absolute miss!
Today, I'll walk you through the latest complete guide to Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium, including transportation, admission tickets, and in-depth touring tips so you can make the most out of your visit!
(I have visited Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium twice myself. The iconic Kuroshio Sea, once recognized as the world's second-largest aquarium tank, remains utterly mesmerizing. It is an ideal spot for families with kids, friends, and couples alike.)
◎ How to Get to Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium?
Since most visitors explore Okinawa by renting a car and driving, driving to Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium is naturally the most convenient and recommended way. Simply enter MAPCODE: 553075797 into your car GPS navigation system and follow the route. It takes about 2 hours from Naha Airport.
On the other hand, if you prefer public transport, there are two main choices: express buses and sightseeing day tour buses. Here are the details:
1. Express Buses
These express buses travel via the Okinawa Expressway. The three main options are the Yanbaru Express Bus, Okinawa Airport Shuttle, and Bus Route 117. You can board them from Naha Airport or downtown Naha. Their routes are quite similar: each runs roughly 8 to 11 services daily, taking about 2 to 3 hours to reach the aquarium, costing around 2,000 JPY (except Bus 117, which costs 2,550 JPY). It is reasonably convenient and affordable. You can check the combined timetable from each company by clicking here. Here is a quick comparison of key details:
| Yanbaru Express Bus | Okinawa Airport Shuttle | Bus Route 117 | |
| Advance Booking | No | Yes | No |
| On-site Ticket Purchase | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Online Payment Options | None | Credit Card | None |
| On-site Payment Options | Cash / Mobile Pay / IC Transit Cards / Credit Card | Cash | |
(If boarding from Naha Airport, the Yanbaru Express Bus and Bus Route 117 depart from Bus Stop No. 2 outside the Domestic Terminal, while the Okinawa Airport Shuttle departs from Bus Stop No. 1 right next door. Note that because these express buses travel on high-speed expressways, standing passengers are not permitted. If all seats are occupied, you will have to wait for the next bus.)
2. Sightseeing Tour Buses
This is the classic guided day tour option. Similar to an express bus, but it includes stops at various attractions along the way. Departing from Naha Airport, downtown Naha, or American Village, there are numerous full-day and half-day bus tours available, such as the Central and Northern Okinawa Day Tour, Churaumi Aquarium & American Village Day Tour (Departing Naha/Chatan), Okinawa Hip Hop Sightseeing Bus Tour, and Okinawa Hip Hop Bus. All you need to do is hop on and enjoy the ride.
Lastly, you could theoretically take local city buses that do not use the expressway. However, departing from Naha Airport or the city center requires transfers, takes nearly 4 hours, and often ends up costing more in total fare. Therefore, it is generally not recommended unless you have ample travel time, wish to make multiple stops along the coast, or hold an unlimited local bus pass. For details, see my Okinawa Bus Guide.
◎ Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium Tickets
Standard admission tickets for Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium are: Adults 2,180 JPY, High School Students 1,440 JPY, Elementary & Junior High School Students 710 JPY, and Children under 6 are Free.
You can also purchase discounted tickets online via platforms like KKday or Klook, or save even more by booking an Okinawa Multi-Attraction Pass.
◎ What to See & Do at Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium?
Now that you know the essentials regarding transit and ticketing, let's dive into exploring the highlights of Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium!
(The aquarium is situated within Ocean Expo Park. While there are multiple parking lots throughout the expansive grounds, the top recommendation is the North Gate Parking Lot (P7 Multi-story Parking). It has plenty of spaces, is completely free, and is the closest lot—just a 3-minute walk to the aquarium entrance.)
(The grand whale shark statue at the main plaza is undoubtedly the first impression most visitors have of Churaumi Aquarium. The colossal whale shark is the star resident of the aquarium, and you will soon see it gliding gracefully inside.)
(Before entering the building, you will pass through the "Uminchu Gate" [Fisherman's Gate]. From here, you can gaze across the vast park grounds and out over the stunning emerald ocean waters. On a clear day, you can even spot Ie Island on the horizon!)
(The aquarium spans 4 floors. Visitors descend gradually from the 4th floor down to the 1st floor. Each floor has a distinct theme—The Great Sea, Journey to the Coral Reef, Journey to the Kuroshio, and Journey into the Deep Sea. The layout mimics descending from shallow coastal waters into the abyssal ocean trench, a thoughtful architectural touch I really appreciate.)
1. Journey to the Coral Reef
(First, you will encounter diverse corals, tropical fish, and spiny lobsters native to shallow coastal reefs and sandy sea beds. The "Coral Sea" exhibit directly pumps in fresh seawater from off the coast of Okinawa to cultivate living corals, successfully propagating around 440 colonies spanning 80 distinct coral species. It is a harmonious match with Okinawa's rich surrounding marine ecosystem.)
(During my trip around Christmastime, there was even a special holiday aquarium dressed up like a wrapped Christmas gift box—absolutely adorable.)
2. Journey to the Kuroshio
(Next comes the true centerpiece of the facility: the renowned Kuroshio Sea. Holding 7,500 tons of water and standing as the world's second-largest aquarium tank, it houses schools of manta rays, giant whale sharks, and thousands of pelagic fishes cruising gracefully through the deep blue. On my first visit years ago, I witnessed a male and female pair of giant whale sharks swimming together; sadly, the female passed away a few years back, so during this return visit, the majestic male whale shark "Jinta" was swimming solo.)
(Right beside the Kuroshio Sea is the hugely popular "Cafe Ocean Blue." In addition to light meals, beverages, pasta, taco rice, and purple yam soft-serve ice cream, it features 9 paid reserved designated seats along the glass. Sitting right up against the acrylic panel while watching marine life glide by while enjoying a snack is an extraordinary experience—and the backdrop for countless viral Instagram photos and reels. Note that these designated seats cannot be booked in advance; you must register on-site for a numbered queue at 500 JPY per 40 minutes. The aquarium gets very crowded, and wait times spike during peak meal hours, so visiting during off-peak times gives you the best chance of snagging a seat.)
(Leaving the main Kuroshio Sea viewing hall leads you into the "Aqua Room" observation lounge. In my view, the visual perspective here rivaled the main hall. An acrylic tunnel ceiling cuts straight through the water, making you feel immersed beneath the sea as stingrays and fish drift directly overhead. Unlike many aquariums worldwide, Churaumi's acrylic viewing panels are kept immaculately clean, allowing you to capture stunning, crystal-clear photographs.)
3. Journey into the Deep Sea
(Finally, you arrive at the "Journey into the Deep Sea" zone. This area showcases roughly 150 species of deep-sea marine life collected from waters exceeding depths of 200 meters around Okinawa. Many of these rare creatures are exceptionally difficult to maintain in captivity, offering visitors a fascinating look into the bizarre adaptations of life in the pitch-black abyss.)
4. Aquarium Feeding Shows
(Daily feeding presentations take place in the two largest tanks: Tank No. 6 "Sea of Tropical Fish" and Tank No. 11 "Kuroshio Sea." The Tropical Fish feeding is at 13:00 and 15:30, while the Kuroshio Sea feeding is held at 9:30, 15:00, and 17:00. I happened to catch the Tropical Fish feeding show, and seeing the frenzy of colorful fish swarming the diver was fantastic. If your schedule aligns, make sure not to miss these times!)
(Near the exit, there is a hidden route that many visitors miss: take the dedicated whale shark & ray exhibit elevator from the 1st floor up to the "Kuroshio Exploration (Above-water Observation Area)." This walkway lets you look straight down into the enormous Kuroshio Sea tank from open surface catwalks!)
5. Souvenir Gift Shop
(Upon wrapping up the main aquarium exhibits, you naturally exit through the souvenir gift shop "Blue Manta." As Okinawa's quintessential flagship attraction, Churaumi boasts an astonishing lineup of exclusive merchandise, plushies, and local Okinawan snack collaborations, along with photo-op display zones for travelers to commemorate their visit.)
6. Surrounding Attractions in Ocean Expo Park
(Browsing the main aquarium takes roughly 3 hours. If you still have time and energy, right outside the building across the plaza are facilities including the Okichan Theater (Dolphin Show), Dolphin Lagoon, Sea Turtle Pool, and Manatee Pool—all of which offer free admission against the gorgeous backdrop of Okinawa's ocean. The park layout is truly remarkably thought out.)
(The Okichan Theater dolphin show is by far the most beloved outdoor attraction. You can watch skilled trainers and lively dolphins leap in sync, and even participate in dolphin feeding sessions—all completely free of charge. It is ideal for families with young children. With only 5 showtimes daily, check the official website timetable beforehand.)
(Ocean Expo Park spans a massive geographic footprint. Beyond Churaumi Aquarium, travelers seeking deep exploration can check out the Native Okinawan Village, Tropical & Subtropical Arboretum, and Emerald Beach. You can take the park's shuttle bus between distant sites (300 JPY per ride or 500 JPY for a 1-day pass). However, fewer casual visitors do this, as the other spots are somewhat less dramatic compared to Churaumi Aquarium itself, making them best suited for travelers wanting a comprehensive slow-paced exploration.)
And that wraps up our detailed guide to Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium! It remains a must-see landmark for practically every traveler coming to Okinawa. Returning after several years, I was just as enthralled as on my first visit. Seeing those colossal ocean tanks, mesmerizing marine animals, and sparkling waters firsthand will surely make you fall in love with its timeless charm!
