Locals' Hidden Gem! Minna Island, Okinawa: Ferry Transport, Attractions, and Travel Guide!

Minna Island | Stunning Outer Island in Northern Okinawa

Compared to other famous islands across Okinawa, Minna Island (Minnajima) is relatively lesser known internationally. However, while traveling around northern Okinawa, a Japanese friend strongly urged me to visit Minna Island. That was when I realized it is actually considered a must-visit offshore island paradise by Japanese locals, perfect for both half-day and full-day excursions. Naturally, I decided to take the trip and explore it firsthand!

Today, I'm sharing this comprehensive guide to Minna Island covering ferry transportation, island attractions, and water activities. Let's explore this gorgeous crescent-shaped gem together!

Crystal-clear turquoise waters and white sandy shores of Minna Island in Okinawa

(Minna Island is situated just off the northwestern coast of Okinawa Main Island, very close to both the main island and Sesoko Island. It earns stellar reviews for its incredible water clarity, abundant water sports, and pristine environment. Because of its graceful crescent outline, it is also affectionately nicknamed the "Croissant Island".)

1. How to Get to Minna Island?

Unlike some Okinawa islands that are bridged to the main island, Minna Island has no bridge connection and can only be reached by boat. Currently, there is only one ferry route operated by "Minna Kaiun", running directly from Toguchi Port in Motobu Town to Minna Island, with a crossing time of just about 15 minutes.

(The ferry schedule varies by season. Summer from July through September is peak travel season for Minna Island, offering the most frequent departures—about 6 to 8 sailings daily, departing roughly every hour. During other months, service drops to just 3 to 4 trips per day. Please check the latest timetable on the official Minna Kaiun website.)

(Toguchi Port is quite compact, featuring primarily a ticket counter and a passenger waiting lounge. The harbor offers plenty of free parking spaces—over 100 spots—making it exceptionally convenient if you are renting a car and driving.)

(Right outside the waiting room is the boarding pier. When you spot the ferry marked with Minna Island pulling up, get ready to hop aboard!)

(Departing from Toguchi Port, it takes only about 15 minutes to reach Minna Island. As soon as you step ashore, Minna Beach stretches right before your eyes, instantly plunging you into a dreamy island vacation vibe!)

Lastly, aside from buying ferry tickets on your own, you can also join an organized day tour. That way you won't need to worry about transfers, and meals as well as water sports are bundled together. Packages like the "Minna Island Beach Swimming & Marine Sports Day Tour" are excellent choices to just kick back and enjoy the fun!

2. Minna Beach

Minna Island is compact enough to explore entirely on foot. The absolute star attraction of the island is Minna Beach. Its fine white sand, mesmerizing ocean gradient, and thriving coral reef ecosystem earned it a coveted one-star beach rating in the Michelin Green Guide Japan. In addition to the postcard-perfect scenery, there are plenty of water sports available—an absolute must-visit for ocean lovers!

Sunbathers relaxing under umbrellas along pristine Minna Beach

(After exploring numerous beaches across Okinawa, Minna Beach had the highest ratio of Japanese domestic travelers I've ever seen. While many famous Okinawa beaches are bustling with international tourists, seeing almost exclusively Japanese vacationers here was a delightful surprise. In fact, this tranquil local vibe is likely why it remains so beloved among domestic travelers seeking an authentic getaway.)

(The sand quality on Minna Beach is exquisite. Although the beach is not excessively long, it exudes a deeply relaxing atmosphere. The only minor downside is that there are no lifeguards on duty. Fortunately, the outer breakwater keeps the water very calm, though swimming safely and remaining alert is still essential.)

(Equipment rental prices on Minna Island are among the most affordable across all Okinawa beaches I've visited. For snorkeling gear, fins run 500 JPY, masks 1,000 JPY, and life vests 500 JPY. Beach loungers, parasols, and beach mats cost around 1,000 to 1,500 JPY for full-day rental use.)

(Minna Island offers an array of marine activities, including snorkeling, scuba diving, jet skiing, banana boat rides, and parasailing. You can sign up on-site, which is incredibly convenient. I highly recommend diving underwater to explore the vibrant fish schools and colorful coral reefs—it's an unforgettable sight.)

(The island is pleasantly small, and you can stroll around the entire settlement comfortably. You'll find a few BBQ spots, beverage stands, and small eateries, though dining choices are limited, so quite a few visitors bring their own snacks and lunch from the main island.)

Visitor welcome facility, shower rooms, and restrooms near Minna Port

(Right next to the beach is the visitor facility, equipped with free showers and restrooms. While simple, the amenities are very clean and functional. Do keep in mind that long lines tend to form right before ferry departure times, so plan your showers ahead!)

That wraps up my travel guide to Minna Island. Much like other premier Okinawa outer islands such as the Kerama Islands, Kouri Island, and Kudaka Island, Minna Island boasts crystal-clear waters and quick ferry access, making it ideal for a seamless day trip. I'm so glad I listened to my Japanese friend's advice and tweaked my itinerary—I would happily revisit Minna Island anytime!
