Okinawa | 9 Major World Heritage Sites
What World Heritage Sites Are in Okinawa?
Although Okinawa is relatively compact compared to other Japanese prefectures, it astonishingly encompasses 9 World Heritage Sites! This is precisely what makes Okinawa so special. Beyond gourmet food, shopping, and stunning tropical beaches, it is steeped in rich history and culture. Today, I'll introduce the 9 Major World Heritage Sites of Okinawa—a must-read guide for history lovers visiting Japan!
1. Shuri Castle (Shurijo)
This was the political and economic heart of the Ryukyu Kingdom and remains the grandest fortress in Okinawa. Within Shurijo Castle Park alone, there are three World Heritage Sites. Thanks to its convenient transport links and proximity to top attractions like Kokusai Dori, Naminoue Shrine, Shintoshin (Omoromachi), and the Kinjo-cho Stone Paved Road, it has always been an extremely popular tourist spot and the most famous World Heritage Site in Okinawa! If you are visiting Okinawa for the first time, I definitely recommend starting your adventure at Shuri Castle!
◎ Address: 1-2 Shuri Kinjocho, Naha City, Okinawa Prefecture (MAP CODE: 33 161 526*66)

2. Sonohyan-utaki Stone Gate
Also located within Shurijo Castle Park, this is a relatively understated World Heritage Site, yet it holds deep cultural significance. It is said that whenever the Ryukyuan kings embarked on journeys outside the castle, they would stop here to pray for safe travels. I recommend paying it a visit while exploring Shuri Castle!
