Fukuoka Budget Flights | The Ultimate Cheap Airfare Guide
In recent years, more and more low-cost carrier (LCC) routes have opened between Taiwan and Japan. Promotional deals pop up frequently online, giving travelers a wider and much cheaper selection of airfare options.
In this post, I will share a complete overview and comparison of budget airline routes between Taiwan and Fukuoka, tips on how to find the cheapest tickets, and my firsthand flight experience. I hope this helps you plan your trip smoothly!
1. What is a Low-Cost Carrier (LCC)?
Low-cost carriers (commonly known as LCCs or budget airlines) significantly reduce operational costs by unbundling optional perks, selling tickets online, offering a single-class cabin, and adopting a pay-as-you-go model for onboard amenities. In short:
- LCCs provide essential transportation; extras (in-flight meals, checked baggage, seat selection) require additional fees.
- They often operate narrow-body fleets, frequently use secondary terminals, and departure times are typically early morning or late night.
- For travelers with flexible schedules who don't need luxury service, they are by far the best money-saving option.

3. How to Find Cheap Flight Tickets
Below, I'd like to share the two major flight comparison search engines I previously highlighted in my Okinawa budget flights guide: Skyscanner and FunTime. These engines not only compare various LCC route combinations but also display lowest fare trends—platforms I personally use constantly!
1. Skyscanner
Skyscanner is the world's largest flight comparison platform and the go-to tool for travelers before booking. Beyond official airline website prices for both LCCs and full-service carriers, it searches global online travel agencies (OTAs) for competitive deals. It's truly indispensable when booking Fukuoka flights!
(One thing I love about flight metasearch engines is that they show total tax-inclusive fares upfront. Some LCC booking portals initially show base fares excluding taxes and baggage fees until the checkout step; using comparison platforms avoids that frustration completely.)
(Skyscanner also features an intuitive calendar and chart view of monthly prices, making it easy to identify the cheapest days to fly. This is super handy for anyone with flexible travel dates. Plus, you can switch language and currency in the top right corner.)
2. FunTime
Similar to Skyscanner, FunTime is a flight metasearch platform that specifically isolates budget airlines, making it exceptionally user-friendly for travelers who only want LCC options. Because it is primarily Taiwan-based, its standout feature is comparing local travel agencies and third-party portals rarely indexed on Skyscanner. Checking multiple platforms guarantees you never miss a bargain!
(FunTime includes a real-time budget flight promotion tracker, an incredible feature that aggregates active discount campaigns so you don't have to keep refreshing individual airline pages. It shows promo countdowns and preview notices so you know exactly when sales go live!)
(Just like Skyscanner, once you select your origin and destination, it displays all available LCC combinations without cluttering your screen with full-service airline results—ideal for budget travelers.)
(FunTime's "Low Price Calendar" displays fares across nearby dates for that specific LCC route, making it effortless for flexible travelers to spot the cheapest departure day.)
Generally speaking, based on long-term observation, Fukuoka flight routes frequently go on sale, with one-way base fares often landing around NT$2,000–NT$2,500 (before taxes). Therefore, a round-trip Taiwan–Fukuoka LCC ticket under NT$6,000 including taxes is considered a fair deal, while NT$5,000–NT$6,000 represents great value and a prime buying window. If you manage to snag round-trip tickets under NT$5,000 all-in, you've hit the jackpot!
4. My Fukuoka Flight Experience
During a promotional network-wide sale celebrating new routes, I booked Tigerair Taiwan flights for our family of four for NT$18,816 in total—averaging just NT$4,704 per person round-trip, tax-inclusive! That is genuinely dirt cheap (we scored three tickets at the absolute rock-bottom promo tier and one at the next lowest tier). Sitting at the computer the minute sales open definitely pays off (laughs). Budget airlines truly unlock massive savings so you can allocate more travel funds to food and attractions. Here is a breakdown of our journey:
(Since Tigerair Taiwan includes a generous 10 kg carry-on allowance per passenger, we opted to purchase just one 20 kg checked bag for the four of us to share. If you need multiple bags, advance seat selection, or hot meals, your costs will increase accordingly—that's standard LCC unbundled pricing.)
(We departed from Taoyuan International Airport. Tigerair's Fukuoka flights are predominantly early morning departures, with midday flights only on Mondays and Tuesdays. Budget flight departure times are notoriously early, which we anticipated, yet the terminal was already buzzing with travelers at 3 or 4 in the morning!)
(I'm practically a Tigerair regular, having flown with them to Okinawa, Osaka, and Tokyo without issues. Flying to Fukuoka with them was just as smooth and reassuring.)
(Traveling from Taiwan to Fukuoka is very convenient, taking only about 2.5 hours. While Tigerair's seat pitch is on the tighter side, that's expected for an LCC. For short-haul flights that save significant money, it remains my top preference.)
(We finally arrived in Fukuoka! The International Terminal at Fukuoka Airport is slightly more compact than I imagined, but the arrival lobby has everything you need right in front of you: car rental desks, SIM card providers, tourist info centers, and more.)
(Just a few steps outside the doors, you'll find bus stops, free shuttle buses, and taxi stands. Note that the subway station is located at the Domestic Terminal, connected by a free terminal shuttle bus. Fukuoka Airport's standout advantage is being the closest airport to a city center in Japan, getting you into downtown Hakata in no time at all!)
That wraps up my guide to budget flights to Fukuoka! Choosing an LCC is a fantastic way to trim travel costs. Both budget and traditional airlines have their merits; it simply boils down to personal travel style and priorities. For short trips to Japan, budget airlines are more than sufficient for me, and I'll keep jumping on upcoming promotional fares. Look out for future posts covering what to do once you land in Fukuoka!
