For these reasons, they are highly recommended destinations for exploring the Great Barrier Reef.

Today, I'll be sharing a detailed overview of attractions, water activities, ferry transportation, and personal travel tips for both Green Island and Fitzroy Island to help make your trip planning completely smooth!

Guide to Great Barrier Reef day trips to Green Island and Fitzroy Island from Cairns

◎ How to Get to Green Island and Fitzroy Island?

Before reading further, I recommend checking out my Introduction to the Great Barrier Reef. As explained there, there are no public ferries to the Great Barrier Reef, meaning you must travel on boats operated by private tour and ferry companies.

The most common operators running the Green Island route are Great Adventures, Reef Magic, and Big Cat. For the Fitzroy Island route, the two primary companies are Raging Thunder Adventures and Sunlover. All depart from the Cairns Reef Fleet Terminal, where check-in counters are conveniently located. The journey takes around 45 minutes each way. Since these are mostly day tours, each operator typically runs only one departure and one return trip per day, departing between 8:00 AM and 9:00 AM, and returning around 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM.

Ferry departing Cairns Reef Fleet Terminal heading to Green Island and Fitzroy Island

(Note: If choosing Big Cat for Green Island, they operate two different vessels: the Reef Rocket takes the standard 45 minutes, while the Big Cat catamaran takes about twice as long.)

Additionally, ferry tickets are frequently packaged with various tour activities, such as snorkeling, scuba diving, ocean kayaking, or glass-bottom boat tours. Prices fluctuate greatly depending on the package you select, ranging anywhere from AUD $70–80 to $100–200+, so it pays to compare options based on what you want to do.

Because the Great Barrier Reef is a world-renowned destination, booking your boat tickets and day packages in advance is strongly advised. To simplify the booking process, you can book via KKday for the Green Island & Norman Reef Upgrade Day Tour, Green Island Day Tour, or Raging Thunder Fitzroy Island Day Tour. Alternatively, check Klook for the Great Adventures Green Island Cruise or Fitzroy Island Day Tour (+ Water Activities). These packages utilize the reliable services of Great Adventures and Raging Thunder Adventures, often at discounted rates compared to booking direct.

◎ Green Island

Green Island is the closest reef island to Cairns and uniquely features both a coral cay reef and a lush tropical rainforest growing together. The island boasts a resort, shopping village, dining venues, and a marine park, making it the most well-equipped and convenient island in the Great Barrier Reef.

On my visit, I chose the Green Island package with Great Adventures. As the largest reef operator in Cairns, Great Adventures is the go-to choice for most visitors heading to Green Island. Here is my complete day trip breakdown.

◎ Address: Green Island, Queensland, Australia
◎ Common Operators: Great Adventures | Reef Magic | Big Cat
◎ Budget Tip: Book via KKday for the Green Island & Norman Reef Upgrade Day Tour, Green Island Day Tour, or via Klook for the Great Adventures Green Island Cruise to find rates lower than booking directly through Great Adventures.

Tour check-in counters inside the Cairns Reef Fleet Terminal

(Almost all Great Barrier Reef excursions departing Cairns require you to check in at the Reef Fleet Terminal on the morning of your trip. The desks are lined up side by side, making company names easy to spot.)

(The Great Adventures ferry departs at 8:30 AM, with check-in starting 30 minutes prior. Cafes and waterproof camera rental shops are located right around the terminal.)

Tour catamarans and ferries docked at Cairns Reef Fleet Terminal boarding gates

(Each operator's vessel docks at designated berths with staff along the walkways directing passengers, making boarding smooth and effortless.)

(After boarding, you'll be asked to review and fill out safety guideline forms and activity waivers.)

Village precinct and resort buildings on Green Island

(Stepping off the pier brings you directly into Green Island Resort, complete with a visitor information center, beach boutiques, and dining outlets. Since food options on Green Island are plentiful, standard tour packages typically do not include lunch, leaving you free to choose.)

Dive shop and snorkel gear rental counter on Green Island

(In the middle of the village shopping area, you'll find the water sports dive shop renting snorkeling gear, scuba sets, and optical prescription masks. Great Adventures tour participants also collect their pre-booked gear here.)

(Just a 2-minute stroll past the shopping village brings you to the island's primary beach, where you can swim, sunbathe, and snorkel with lifeguards on duty.)

(Here is the gear hire price board on the beach for your budgeting reference.)

School of fish gliding through clear turquoise waters near Green Island beach

(A standout feature of Green Island's beach is the gentle, shallow lagoon. You can wade quite far out and still stand comfortably, making it remarkably safe for swimmers of all experience levels. Additionally, fish swim right near the shore; I spotted nearly ten species within minutes!)

Wooden boardwalk winding through lush rainforest in Green Island National Park

(The entire island is protected as Green Island National Park. National park records indicate it supports 126 species of tropical native plants. Beyond water activities, taking a peaceful walk along the forested boardwalk trails is a wonderful way to admire the island's flora.)

Entrance sign and exhibits at Marineland Melanesia crocodile habitat on Green Island

(Another famous landmark here is Marineland Melanesia, a marine attraction featuring a crocodile habitat, aquariums, and indigenous art. Its most celebrated resident is Cassius, recognized as the world's largest living saltwater crocodile in captivity, over 110 years old!)

◎ Fitzroy Island

Fitzroy Island is another must-visit gem in the Inner Great Barrier Reef. It offers an incredible lineup of activities—from snorkeling, ocean trampolines, and glass-bottom boats to sea kayaking. Uniquely, you can also hike scenic national park trails to reach a historic lighthouse and high-elevation lookout points with breathtaking panoramic views over the Great Barrier Reef.

For my Fitzroy Island adventure, I selected the day tour operated by Raging Thunder Adventures, Cairns' primary specialist for Fitzroy Island, offering add-ons like snorkeling sets, glass-bottom boat tours, and sea kayaking.

◎ Address: Fitzroy Island, Queensland, Australia
◎ Common Operators: Raging Thunder Adventures | Sunlover
◎ Budget Tip: Book via KKday for the Raging Thunder Fitzroy Island Day Tour or via Klook for the Fitzroy Island Day Tour (+ Water Activities) to secure rates lower than booking directly through Raging Thunder Adventures.

Raging Thunder ferry arriving at the Fitzroy Island jetty

(Just like Green Island, you check in at the Cairns Reef Fleet Terminal before departure at 9:00 AM. The ferry is slightly smaller than Great Adventures' fleet with fewer indoor seats, but it offers an excellent open-air upper deck.)

Fitzroy Island Resort buildings nestled beneath tropical hillside greenery
Shaded resort walkway and grounds on Fitzroy Island
Foxy's Bar and restaurant patio at Fitzroy Island Resort

(Directly beside the jetty lies Fitzroy Island Resort. Compared to bustling Green Island, commercial facilities here are more low-key, consisting mainly of Foxy's Bar, a café, and the dive sports rental shop.)

Walking track map and tourist trail guide board on Fitzroy Island

(Fitzroy Island features two primary beaches: Welcome Bay, right in front of the resort, and the renowned Nudey Beach. A rainforest walking trail connects the two in about 45 minutes return. Since the ferry wharf is in Welcome Bay, that is where most visitors base themselves.)

Beach sports activity hut and equipment hire center on Fitzroy Island
Snorkel gear and life jacket pickup counter on Fitzroy Island
Outdoor equipment rental shack by the beach on Fitzroy Island

(Head over to the beachfront activity hut to collect your pre-booked snorkel gear and picnic lunch packs. Note that they only provide standard masks without prescription lenses, so keep that in mind if you require corrective vision.)

Coral rubble shoreline and visitors relaxing on Welcome Bay beach, Fitzroy Island
Crystal clear turquoise waters and beach scenery at Fitzroy Island

(While the shoreline landscape is stunning, snorkeling straight out from the center of Welcome Bay was somewhat underwhelming—there wasn't much marine life visible. I soon discovered that swimming towards the rocky ends on either side of the bay reveals vibrant reef life. Take caution around the submerged rocks, however.)

Vibrant hard corals and marine habitat underwater at Fitzroy Island

(Whereas Green Island is famous for dense fish populations, Fitzroy Island stands out for beautiful fringing coral formations. Once you locate the proper snorkeling spots, you'll see gorgeous coral colonies.)

Glass-bottom boat cruising over fringing reefs near Fitzroy Island
Tourists viewing marine life through glass panels inside the boat at Fitzroy Island
Glass-bottom boat navigating scenic coastal waters around Fitzroy Island

(I added the glass-bottom boat tour to my Fitzroy Island itinerary. Not only did it provide an easy look into underwater coral gardens, but cruising along the granite coastline of Fitzroy Island—a mountainous terrain rare among coral cays—offered sensational coastal vistas.)

Coastal forest and rocky coastline in Fitzroy Island National Park
Steep hiking trail ascending through Fitzroy Island National Park
Forest hiking trail surrounded by lush greenery on Fitzroy Island

(Fitzroy Island is also a designated national park; you can hike to the island summit from the jetty in about 1.5 to 2.5 hours return.)

Historic lighthouse tower at Fitzroy Island National Park summit
Sweeping aerial view of turquoise ocean and reef from Fitzroy Island summit lookout

(The hiking track is fairly steep. Most hikers complete the loop visiting both the historic lighthouse and the peak summit lookout before returning to Welcome Bay. The sweeping vista of the Great Barrier Reef from the top is breathtaking and provides a completely different perspective than sea level.)

That concludes my guide to the two most popular Inner Barrier Reef islands: Green Island and Fitzroy Island. The Great Barrier Reef is truly an unmissable highlight when traveling in Australia, and I know you will fall in love with its one-of-a-kind natural beauty!
