Bruny Island Guide: Attractions, Transportation, and Gourmet Food.
When traveling to Tasmania, Australia, Bruny Island, located just off the coast of Hobart, is easily one of the most highly recommended destinations. Bruny Island is divided into North and South Bruny, connected by a narrow sandy isthmus known as "The Neck." The island is remarkably pristine—with few paved roads—and boasts protected wilderness like South Bruny National Park. Teeming with unique wildlife and dramatic coastal scenery, it has always been a top favorite among travelers!
◎ How to Get to Bruny Island?
First off: how do you get to Bruny Island from mainland Tasmania? It is actually very simple: drive your car to the ferry terminal at Kettering, and after a 15 to 20-minute ferry crossing, you will arrive at the ferry wharf on North Bruny Island.
Ferry sailings are frequent, running roughly every 20 minutes from around 6:00 AM to 7:00 PM. Here are the detailed fare tiers:
As you can see from the fare schedule, ticket prices are primarily determined by vehicle type and size. The differences between Regular, Saver, and Super Saver correspond to peak, off-peak, and super off-peak travel times. Peak hours roughly span 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM, while other hours are considered off-peak or super off-peak (check the official website). In general, most road-tripping tourists will fall under standard vehicles under 6 meters (fares are AUD 53.20, 46.20, or 39.20 depending on the time slot). The fare is charged per vehicle, regardless of passenger count.
(There is a tollbooth just before boarding where you can purchase tickets on-site or book in advance via the official website, though advance bookings are restricted to vehicles under 6 meters. While there is an ATM nearby, it is not very convenient, so I recommend carrying some cash or paying directly by credit card. Before boarding, traffic splits into three or four lanes, and ground staff will guide cars onto the ferry one by one.)
(Once on board, the car deck feels surprisingly like a floating garage!)
(During the 15-minute crossing, you can step up to the upper passenger deck to take in the breeze and scenic views. It is a wonderfully relaxing mini-cruise!)
◎ Bruny Island Highlights & Attractions
Although Bruny Island might look compact on a map, driving from the northern ferry terminal all the way to the southern tip takes about 1.5 hours. The island is packed with charming spots, including Cape Bruny Lighthouse, Adventure Bay, and local berry farms. During this trip, our primary highlights were visiting The Neck and joining the premier island excursion: Bruny Island Cruises.
1. The Neck
This is undeniably the most iconic landmark on Bruny Island: a dramatic, slender sandy isthmus that connects the North and South islands. A wooden boardwalk and lookout platform perched on a sand dune offer a 360-degree panoramic vista across the twin coastal bays. It is a must-see stop that you will naturally pass during your drive.
(The Neck is situated on a coastal sand dune ridge, featuring a wooden staircase that climbs directly up to the summit.)
(This is the breathtaking vista awaiting you at the top. In my opinion, it offers the single finest vantage point on Bruny Island and is the exact scene featured on countless Tasmanian postcards!)
(Due to the narrow topography, the road below runs directly adjacent to the sea, leaving very limited parking space—only around 8 spots. Because it is a top attraction, visitors often have to queue for parking, so if you are driving, I suggest visiting early in the morning or outside peak hours.)
(Tasmania is renowned worldwide as a prime location for viewing the Southern Lights / Aurora Australis. We checked the aurora forecast daily throughout our trip, and the index happened to spike during our stay on Bruny Island! We waited outdoors late into the night; while we did not catch a vivid aurora display, we were treated to an astonishingly clear, brilliant Milky Way. Stargazing on an offshore island with zero light pollution is truly magical!)
2. Bruny Island Cruises
Driving around Bruny Island, you will immediately notice billboards for Bruny Island Cruises' three signature tour options. Their core itineraries are similar: boarding specialized yellow speedboats to cruise along the dramatic southeastern coastline of South Bruny National Park, marveling at towering sea cliffs over 200 meters tall—the highest sea cliffs in Australia. It is an unmissable adventure!

(We opted for the standard 3-hour wilderness cruise. Here is the check-in reception and ticket desk with an on-site cafe—simply search "Bruny Island Cruises" on Google Maps. Because Bruny Island is often quite chilly, you can grab warm beverages here before heading out.)
(Because the cruise heads into the exposed Southern Ocean where winds are freezing, staff hand out warm gloves and heavy-duty red windbreaker/rain ponchos, followed by a brief safety orientation outside the entrance.)
(Next, follow the guides on an easy 1-minute walk down to the boat boarding jetty.)
(Before setting off, the crew goes over a few more safety guidelines. My biggest piece of advice: dress warmly in plenty of layers—never underestimate the southern maritime cold!)
(Cruising along the southeastern shoreline, the boat stops for 5 to 10 minutes at several magnificent coastal geological landmarks for commentary and photo opportunities. Depending on wave conditions, the vessel can rock quite vigorously, so seasickness medication is highly recommended if you are prone to motion sickness.)
(In addition to dramatic seascapes, you have fantastic opportunities to encounter wild dolphins, migrating whales, Australian fur seals, and even penguins—some of which are endemic to Australia. It was such an exhilarating encounter!)
I wholeheartedly recommend Bruny Island Cruises—I enjoyed it so much that I booked it again when I revisited Bruny Island! Skipping this tour while visiting Bruny Island would truly be a missed opportunity. You can easily book online via international platforms such as Klook's Bruny Island Cruise Tour or KKday's Bruny Island Cruise Experience, which offer identical itineraries at official or discounted prices!
◎ Bruny Island Food & Dining Recommendations
While Bruny Island does not have a huge quantity of restaurants, the quality of its culinary offerings is exceptional. Below are three accessible, highly rated dining spots on the island along with our personal reviews.
1. Bruny Island Cheese Company
Located on North Bruny, this renowned artisan cheese company produces a variety of gourmet foods, including artisanal breads, craft beer, and specialty beverages. Impressively, they even infuse cheese and whey into daily goods like handcrafted soaps and skincare products. They have truly elevated cheese-making to an art form—and it is a wonderful place to pick up delicious edible souvenirs!

♁ Phone: (03) 6260 6353
♁ Official Website: Bruny Island Cheese Company
(The shop is charming and cozy, packed with diverse cheese varieties and gourmet items. They also offer complimentary cheese tastings so you can sample the distinct flavors before purchasing.)
(While the cheese shop leans towards picnic bites and souvenirs, there is a lovely shaded outdoor courtyard for dining.)
2. Hotel Bruny
While the name sounds like lodging, in Australia, the term "Hotel" often refers to a traditional pub-style bistro and restaurant. This is the island's premier establishment for hearty, hot meals. The dining room is spacious, portions are generous, and large windows overlook tranquil ocean views, making for a truly enjoyable lunch or dinner!
♁ Address: Hotel Bruny, 3959 Bruny Island Main Rd, Alonnah TAS 7150
♁ Phone: (03) 6293 1148

(For a remote destination like Bruny Island, this restaurant is remarkably spacious, bright, and impeccably maintained.)
(In addition to the main dining room, Hotel Bruny has an adjoining pub bar—classic Aussie lifestyle!)
(There is also a dedicated children's play area, making it ideal for visiting families.)
(Restaurant menu)
(I ordered the signature Hotel Bruny Chicken Parma. I usually have a healthy appetite, and this dish was both huge and thoroughly satisfying—crispy, cheesy, and utterly delicious!)
3. Get Shucked Oyster Farm
When visiting Bruny Island, eating freshly shucked oysters is practically mandatory!
Tasmania is world-famous for its pristine seafood, and Hobart is packed with excellent seafood restaurants—but Bruny Island takes freshness to another level. Get Shucked is located right along the main road in North Bruny, making it impossible to miss. While the venue is intimate, its cleanliness and welcoming decor are top-notch, the oysters could not be fresher, and they also sell regional gourmet specialties.
♁ Address: Get Shucked, 1735 Bruny Island Main Rd, Great Bay, North Bruny TAS 7150
♁ Phone: 0439 303 597
♁ Official Website: Get Shucked Oyster Farm
(Exterior view of Get Shucked Oyster Farm)
(Inside, there are just two or three tables, creating an intimate oyster bar setting with a breezy, coastal island ambiance.)
(Here is what we ordered: I personally prefer natural, unadorned fresh oysters. They were plump, briny, sweet, and priced very reasonably. You can check the complete menu here.)
Furthermore, local operators offer curated gastronomic experiences, such as the all-inclusive Bruny Island Foodie & Sightseeing Tour, or the premium Tasmanian Seafood Seduction Cruise departing from Hobart, where you can feast on freshly gathered abalone, sea urchin, rock lobster, oysters, salmon, and fine Tasmanian wines. Definitely worth checking out if you love food!
That wraps up my travel guide to Bruny Island! Acting as an offshore island of an island state, Bruny offers an incredibly tranquil atmosphere. Traveling this far south toward the edge of the world is an unforgettable experience. Being just a short journey from Hobart, it works perfectly as a day trip or an overnight escape—a truly rewarding addition to any Tasmanian road trip!
