Uji Travel Guide | Essential Sightseeing & Itinerary
When you hear "Uji," the first thing that probably springs to mind is authentic "Uji matcha." Yet, beyond its world-renowned green tea, Uji is home to prestigious National Treasures, UNESCO World Heritage Sites, picturesque river scenery, and deep literary roots. Conveniently situated between Kyoto, Osaka, and Nara, Uji makes for a seamless and rewarding half-day or full-day excursion that draws countless independent travelers across the Kansai region each year.
In this guide, I will walk you through the top 13 must-visit attractions in Uji, essential matcha eateries, transit details from Kyoto/Osaka/Nara, and a curated walking itinerary to help you make the most of your trip!
1. How to Get to Uji
Whether traveling from Kyoto, Osaka, or Nara, getting to Uji is straightforward via either the JR Line or the Keihan Railway. The local tourism division has published an intuitive transit map that lays out all route connections clearly:
1. Departing from Kyoto (Most Popular)
- JR Nara Line: Board the JR Nara Line directly from JR Kyoto Station to JR Uji Station. The Rapid train takes only about 16 minutes (¥240 one-way, 4–6 departures per hour). This is the fastest, easiest, and most recommended route.
- Keihan Railway: From Keihan Sanjo Station (or Gion-Shijo / Kiyomizu-Gojo along the line), take the Keihan Main Line to Chushojima Station, then transfer to the Keihan Uji Line to Keihan Uji Station. It takes around 30 minutes (¥350, 5–6 departures per hour). This option is ideal if your accommodation is in eastern Kyoto or if you are using a Keihan Sightseeing Pass.
2. Departing from Osaka
- JR Line: From JR Osaka Station, take the JR Tokaido-Sanyo Main Line (Special Rapid) to Kyoto Station, then transfer to the JR Nara Line to JR Uji Station. Total travel time is approximately 45 minutes (¥990, 6–8 trains per hour). This is the most practical transit method from Osaka.
- Keihan Railway: From Keihan Yodoyabashi Station, take the Keihan Main Line to Chushojima Station, then transfer to the Keihan Uji Line to Keihan Uji Station. Travel time is around 50 minutes (¥430, 5–6 trains per hour), which is great value for Keihan Pass holders.
(Traveling directly from Kansai International Airport is also possible by taking the Haruka train to Kyoto Station first, then transferring to the JR Nara Line.)
3. Departing from Nara
- JR Nara Line: Take the JR Nara Line directly from JR Nara Station to JR Uji Station. The Rapid service takes only about 27 minutes (¥510, 4–6 trains per hour). This is by far the most convenient route.
Beyond independent train travel, guided day tours such as the Kyoto & Uji Day Tour, the Kyoto, Nara & Uji Day Tour, or a Private Chartered Car Tour are hassle-free choices where you can simply relax and enjoy the ride!

I highly recommend visiting early in the morning when the gentle sunlight illuminates the facade and fewer crowds let you absorb the noble, serene atmosphere.

3. Recommended Uji One-Day Walking Itinerary
Because the core attractions in Uji are clustered closely along the river, planning a day trip simply means connecting these sights into an easy circular walking route. While a half-day trip covers the highlights, I strongly suggest dedicating a full day so you never feel rushed. Here is my tried-and-true walking route:
JR Uji Station → Nakamura Tokichi Honten → Byodoin Omotesando → Byodoin Phoenix Hall → Uji Park → Uji Shrine → Ujigami Shrine → The Tale of Genji Museum → Uji Bridge → Ujibashi-dori Shopping Street → JR Uji Station
As you can see on the map, this route neatly loops around central Uji. You can adjust the order as you wish—for instance, visiting Nakamura Tokichi at the end of the day before boarding the train. Outlying sights like Mimurotoji, Manpukuji, Amagase Bridge, or the Nintendo Museum are further afield, making them better suited for a two-day itinerary.
Dining note: most restaurants and cafes sit along Ujibashi-dori Shopping Street and Byodoin Omotesando on the west bank of the river. Enjoy lunch on the west side before crossing over to the quieter shrines on the east bank.
