Perth CAT Bus|Free City Loop Buses
Perth is Australia's fourth-largest city, blessed with pleasant weather, countless must-visit attractions, delicious food, and incredibly convenient urban transportation. In my previous Perth Public Transport Guide, I introduced the local trains, regular buses, and ferries. Today, I want to share a unique transit system that operates outside the usual fare rules: the completely free, ticketless "Central Area Transit" loop bus, better known as the CAT Bus.
CAT Bus stands for Central Area Transit Bus. Like other public transit services across greater Perth, it is operated by Transperth. Although "CAT" simply refers to central transit, the acronym conveniently spells "cat," so locals and visitors alike affectionately call them the "Cat Buses."
Perth's free CAT Buses operate across three major urban areas: Perth City, Fremantle, and Joondalup. Below is a detailed breakdown of routes, timetables, and key stops in each area—essential reading whether you're visiting Perth on vacation, traveling independently, or on a working holiday!
(The three major areas operating CAT buses: Perth City, Fremantle, and Joondalup)
1. Perth CAT
The Perth CAT Bus is the free loop bus network serving Perth's downtown core. It is divided into 5 distinct lines: Perth Red CAT, Perth Blue CAT, Perth Yellow CAT, Perth Purple CAT, and Perth Green CAT. Buses run approximately every 5 to 15 minutes. Detailed timetables, route maps, and stops are shown below:
(These five CAT bus lines are extremely useful. During my Perth trip, I rode them almost every single day. They reach the vast majority of Perth city attractions, including Elizabeth Quay, Perth Cultural Centre, Murray Street & Hay Street Mall, The Perth Mint, and Kings Park. They also pass by numerous city hotels, making them highly recommended for all travelers!)
(Perth CAT bus stops are color-coded according to the route. Each stop post displays a route map and estimated wait times. Transperth also offers a live digital tracker online, which you can check here.)
(Riding the CAT bus couldn't be simpler: just hop on board! No ticketing or SmartRider tapping required. When your destination approaches, simply press the stop bell.)
2. Fremantle CAT
Fremantle is a renowned historic port town just southwest of Perth. It was previously served by two free CAT bus routes: Fremantle Red CAT and Fremantle Blue CAT, running every 10 to 15 minutes. Timetable and route details are shown below for reference:
(Although central Fremantle is compact and walkable, these two free CAT bus routes made getting around effortless, connecting popular spots like Fremantle Markets, Fishing Boat Harbour, WA Maritime Museum & E-Shed Markets, and Kings Square.)
3. Joondalup CAT
Joondalup is a major suburban hub north of Perth. Its local CAT bus network comprises three lines: Joondalup Red CAT, Joondalup Blue CAT, and Joondalup Yellow CAT. Operating on weekdays only (no weekend service) every 15 minutes, the timetable and route map are as follows:
(The Joondalup Red CAT and Blue CAT follow the same circuit—one running clockwise and the other counter-clockwise, similar to Brisbane's Free City Loop Bus. Both efficiently link major town center spots, universities, and surrounding sights.)
That concludes our complete overview of the CAT bus systems across Perth's three key areas. Making full use of these free transit routes lets you explore top sights quickly, comfortably, and without spending a cent on fares—an essential tip every Perth traveler needs to know!
